Beavers in history and in nature

Beavers are known as "nature's engineers" because they build dams that create ponds and other habitats for fish and other wildlife. The trapping of beavers and the sale of their pelts were a key part of Oregon's early economy, earning Oregon the nickname “the Beaver state.”
