CALYX, Inc.: A Herstory of Radical Resilience explores the founding and legacy of CALYX Journal, established in 1976 and headquartered in Corvallis, Oregon, to champion women’s and nonbinary voices in literature and art. Drawing from original materials from the organization’s earliest years, the exhibit traces how CALYX grew from a radical local publication into an internationally respected literary institution.
Over the decades, CALYX has published thousands of writers and artists, including early or first appearances by Julia Alvarez, Barbara Kingsolver, Natalie Goldberg, Sharon Olds, and the first U.S. English translations of Nobel Laureate Wislawa Szymborska, as well as pioneering color reproductions of Frida Kahlo’s artwork. These stories reveal the enduring impact of a Corvallis based feminist press rooted in resilience, vision, and community.
